According to the American Diabetes Association, approximately 25.8 million Americans suffer from diabetes with an estimated annual economic cost of $245 billion. Diabetics account for more than 60% of non-traumatic lower limb amputations. Most diabetic amputations are a result of minor injuries that went untreated and resulted in ulcerations.
The ADA recommends that everyone with diabetes have at least one thorough foot exam every year. This helps identify any foot condition that poses a risk of developing into an ulcer. If you have foot deformities or neurology, you should undergo diabetic foot-care exams more frequently.
